SELECT BIBLIOGRAPHY I began collecting books on golf when I was 14 years old, a year after I started playing the game. I have been interested in history since I was a kid, and golf provided me with its own rich history that I could sink my teeth into, as the origins of the game date back some five-hundred years. I was intrigued by the stories of men (and women) playing a game that pits the individual against the elements of nature and a passive opponent, the golf course itself. It is a game that challenges one's self-discipline and composure in the face of adversity, a game Mark Twain once described as "a good walk spoiled." It is a game in which joy and angst exist within a heartbeat of one another, a game that drives some people to drink, others mad, and addicts many for life. To date I have collected about 70 books dealing with various aspects of the game, many of them reprints of classic works. My favorites include James Balfour's Reminiscences of Golf on St. Andrews Links; Herbert Warren Wind's The Story of American Golf; Charles Blair Macdonald's Scotland's Gift - Golf; Robert Browning's A History of Golf; Harry Vardon's The Complete Golfer; Bobby Jones' Down the Fairway; Horace Hutchinson's Hints on Golf; Bernard Darwin's Golf Between Two Wars; Alistair Adamson's Allan Robertson, Golfer; Mark Frost’s The Greatest Game Ever Played: Harry Vardon, Francis Ouimet, and the Birth of Modern Golf; David Joy’s The Scrapbook of Old Tom Morris; Curt Sampson’s Hogan, and Kevin Cook's Tommy's Honor. Below you will find a list of books I deem as important and useful for those interested in having a firm grasp of the game and its history. General Adams, Mike, T.J. Thomasi and Jim Suttie.
