From this spot on the 16th hole at Royal Birkdale, Arnold Palmer hit his ball out of the bushes (literally tearing the bush out of the ground with his 6-iron after hitting the ball) and onto the green to secure the 1961 British Open. I took this after a practice round on a beautiful evening at the 1998 British Open. I stayed in a neat little hostel in Liverpool and took the train to Southport each day, where Birkdale is located.
