Golf has been a family activity from the beginning.  The Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland, for example, was open to the townspeople for golf free of charge up until 1946.  Photos of St. Andrews from the late 19th century show men, women, and children scattering the fairway by the last hole.  In this image, a young American girl tees off at the Mount Pleasant links while her father and brothers look on, c.1905.
