Johnny McDermott (1891-1971) was the U.S. Open champion in 1911 and 1912. He was a cocky, abrasive character who rubbed people the wrong way. After winning his second title at the age of 20, life befell him with tragedies. Four years later he entered a mental institution, suffering from schizophrenia, and spent the rest of his life there. One of the tragic figures of the game. Harry Vardon once said that in his prime McDermott was the greatest player in America, and perhaps the world.
