Gravesite of Old Tom (1821-1908) and his son Young Tom Morris (1851-75) at St. Andrews Cathedral. Young Tom, winner of three consecutive Open titles (1868-70) died on Christmas Day, 1875, just three months after the tragic deaths of his wife and child during childbirth. Legend had it that he succumbed to a broken heart. His father, Old Tom, who won the last of his four Opens championships in 1867, died in 1908. His funeral procession extended the entire length of South Street in St. Andrews, from the port to the cathedral. It was described by Andra Kirkaldy as "a cloud of people," and as Kirkaldy noted, "there were many wet eyes among us, for Old Tom was beloved by everybody." This photo was taken in 1995.
