Grave site of Allan Robertson (1815-59). He was the first man to break 80 at the Old Course in St. Andrews, shooting 40-39 on September 15, 1858. Think about that, on a course that played 6,300 yards long in a day when a long drive went just about 200 yards, and putting on greens akin to a mowed patch of lawn in your backyard with a four inch hole cut in the ground. As a contemporary of his said: "Allan was remarkable for his easy style, depending on a long cool swing, and never on sheer strength, to get the ball to its destination. Indeed, in a word, Allan's game throughout is pure unadulterated science." The marker reads: "He was greatly esteemed for his personal worth and for many years was distinguished as the champion golfer of Scotland." Robertson was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001. This photo was taken on my second trip to St. Andrews in 1995. |
