William Howard Taft was our first golfing President, seen here in action at Chevy Chase Country Club in 1908. Woodrow Wilson and Warren Harding also enjoyed the game, but Dwight Eisenhower, along with the emergence of Arnold Palmer in the mid-1950's, made the game a popular one for the masses. John Kennedy was probably the best of the Presidential golfers (when his back allowed), with the ability to break 80 on occasion. Gerald Ford was also an enthusiastic player and got a bum rap for hitting spectators with his ball (he only did that a couple times). George "41" plays the game with relish and does so quickly (which I like) and Bill Clinton has a pretty good swing which can hit a good ball. For some fun anecdotes on the golf lives of our Presidents, I suggest reading Shep Campbell's Presidential Lies: The Illustrated History of White House Golf .
