Ted Ray (1877-1943) was a very good English golfer in the early part of the 20th century.  He was one of the longest hitters of his day and took a huge lunge at the ball when driving, as you can see here.  He won the 1912 British Open and the 1920 U.S. Open - the first Bobby Jones ever played in.   Ted and Harry Vardon were defeated by Francis Ouimet in the 1913 U.S. Open.  Ray was not a stylish player, but was a terrific  scrambler and could get himself out of trouble well.  Plus, he had a great putting touch.  Ray smoked a pipe while playing and liked a good beer and a good argument.  When up-and-coming British golfer Wilfred Reid provoked him at the 1913 U.S. Open, by mocking his home (the Channel Island of Jersey), Ray hit him square in the nose.  A true character he was.
